The Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers has commended the Federal government directives for the compulsory insurance of public buildings and government assets in the country.

Addressing news men Thursday in Abuja on the forthcoming 2008 National Insurance Conference, the President, Nigerian Registered Insurance Brokers, Dr. Dede O Ejere said the industry has lost significant premium as result of non-insurance of such assets in the past.

He said: "The Nigerian government is quite conscious of the level in which we are now and is doing everything possible to lift the standard of insurance practice and consumption higher than it is and clearly demonstrated it by passing a law for the first time for compulsory insurance of all public buildings."

He said the industry has generated an unprecedented public attention in view of the recapitalisation exercise recently undertaken as evidence by a greater number of companies listed in the stock-exchange.

Dr. Ejere explained that the forthcoming National Insurance conference is one of the largest insurance events held annually and shall attract eminent personalities and professionals in all the sectors of the nation and beyond.

"The theme of the conference is, 'sustaining the relevance of insurance to the National economy.' It is believed that the theme is most appropriate at this period when the insurance industry is itching for greater relevance in the national economy." He said.

The conference which takes place in Abuja on October 7 to 9 is expected to deliver different papers from its theme, corporate governance: Improving the economy through accountability, e-broking delivery service.

"In view of the need to enhance the feedback from the participants, an interactive session tagged, great insurance debate with the topic, 'Universal Banking: views of operators' has been slated for industry players and the public", he said.
