Nigeria: Nasarawa Begins Demolition of Illegal Structures

28 September 2008

The Nasarawa State Urban Development Board weekend began the demolition of illegal, unauthorised and unapproved structures as part of the government's efforts to give the state a befitting look.

The demolition took off yesterday with the demolition of a commercial building situated adjacent to the High Court IV, which houses the state's election petitions tribunal on Shendam road.

Alhaji Ja'afaru Ango, the Managing Director of the board, said the structure was wrongfully located.

"We have issued several warnings to the owner and even offered to give him compensation to cover his expenses, but he refused to cooperate," Ango said.

He said the Certificate of Occupancy issued for the land was for residential, yet he developed it for commercial purposes.

Ango said when the state government reviewed the site, it was discovered that the certificate of occupancy was wrongly issued.

The board's chief executive said since the owner of the structure defied several warnings and refused the compensation, the government was left with no option than to demolish the structure.

He said the owner of the demolished structure will be made to pay for the cost of the demolition and also face prosecution.

Ango said the demolition has begun and will soon go to all areas of the state until the state gets its befitting status.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the owner of the demolished property simply identified as Sir Williams, was not at the venue when his building was pulled down.
