Rwanda: Kist Wins Business Award

Kigali — Recently, Kigali Institute of Science and Technology's (KIST's) Technology and Business Incubation facility (TBIF) won the infoDev award from World Bank amounting to $50,000 for promoting Business Incubation in Rwanda.

This was in response to infoDev's recent Request for Proposals: "Promoting ICT-enabled Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Developing Countries through Business incubation", infoDev received significant interest and a total of 90 proposals were submitted.

After carefully reviewing all proposals received, infoDev's selection committee announced the award of $50,000 to Technology and Business Incubation Facility (TBIF). TBIF Rwanda proposal was ranked number 1 among all the countries

Technology and Business Incubation Facility (TBIF) is a unique initiative established by Kigali Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) to provide Business Incubation and Support Services to accelerate the development of Technology based on start-up entrepreneurs in Rwanda.

This initiative was supported by the Netherlands Organization for International Cooperation in higher education (Nuffic) under their programme to support Institutional Strengthening of Post-secondary Education and Training Capacity (NPT) and the InfoDev Incubator Grant from the Information for Development Programme (InfoDev), World Bank and Competitiveness and Enterprise Development Project (CEDP) under the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Government of Rwanda.

Technology and Business Incubation Facility (TBIF) is a multi-tenancy facility which provides shared services and business development services in Rwanda.

It is targeting all graduates from Rwandan institutions of higher education, innovators, and technicians, together with already practicing entrepreneurs, particularly Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

TBIF provide a comprehensive service package, which could cover a wide range of activities from housing of office and/or production facilities, consulting in all areas of business management, subsidies, access to start-up venture capital, organisation of internal and external education and training, promotion/ marketing of the tenants via media, databases, contacts etc.

TBIF has a direct and indirect impact on rural economic transformation in that it will lead to diversification of rural activities, and this will be associated with creation of opportunities for rural productive employment.
