Cape Town — The man whose name was linked to allegations of a sex tape scandal involving Springbok coach Peter de Villiers has resigned from his position at South African Rugby - a day before he was due to face a disciplinary hearing.

Former Springbok team media manager Chris Hewitt quit his job in SA Rugby's communications department on Thursday.

He had been scheduled to appear before a misconduct hearing at the South African Rugby Union's offices in Cape Town yesterday.

It was recently alleged that Hewitt told De Villiers and others at SA Rugby about an alleged video recording which was said to depict De Villiers in a compromising position with an unknown woman.

The tape was said to be part of a blackmail scam intended to force De Villiers to pick a certain player for the national team.

SA Rugby's strategic communications manager Andy Colquhoun said on Friday that the matter relating to alleged blackmail was never going to form part of Hewitt's disciplinary hearing.

Colquhoun explained that SA Rugby had launched its own investigation into the blackmail claims some time ago.

"We found nothing to warrant further investigation and deemed the matter closed," he said.

Hewitt formally leaves the company at the end of the month. SA Rugby has not made any payments in respect of the termination of his contract other than salary and notice pay due to him.

Colquhoun said: "SA Rugby regards the matter as closed."
