Liberia: 'Arcelormittal's Gift of 100 Vehicles is Open Bribery'

27 September 2008

The faith based media group Christian Media Center says the current government of Liberia lacks the rectitude to fight corruption.

The Media Center in a release issued Tuesday accused the government of encouraging corruption within all sectors of its main line ministries and agencies.

Christian Media Center says the government failure to prosecute people it dismissed on charges of corruption clearly shows its inability to fight corruption.

The Center in the release condemned the recent Arcelor Mittal gift of 100 vehicles to government classifying it as 'opened bribery'.

Christian Media Center says such gift taking by the government from a major investor is questionable and runs contrary to the spirit of transparency and accountability.

The faith based media group noted that no amount of explanation by the Information Ministry aimed at damage control will help erase the huge image problem of corruption associated with the government's action.

The Media Center also expressed fears that the National Legislature is running to a rubber stamp as less care is given by some members of the august body to concerns raised by ordinary citizens and civil society groups on decisions the Legislature makes.

The Center is reminding the lawmakers about their obligation to protect the interest of their electorates.

Christian Media Center also accuse the government of setting up an anti-corruption commission that lacks civil society groups confidence, adding that such commission is not reflective of a transparent organization.

The Center expressed fears that such commission can be used by the very government to humiliate its critics in and out of government.
