A total of 30 youths who stopped taking drugs to observe the holy month of Ramadhan yesterday enjoyed iftar, courtesy of a non-government organization called Safina-Okoa.
Handing over donations for the iftar, the NGO manager, Mr Bupe Kamugisha, said it decided to arrange the iftar to assist the jobless youth observe Ramadan.
He said the assistance would be continual to ensure that the youth turning away from drug abuse feel that the society values them.
"Feeling that the society values them will lead them to change their behaviour and engage in more developmental issues," Mr Kamugisha said.
However, he said despite having reformed more than 2000 youths, the NGO was unable to give them proper assistance because it did not have consistent funds from partners.
"This has made it very difficult for us to carry out services of reforming youths using drugs," Mr Kamugisha noted.
The Safina-Okoa manager called on the Government and other organizations to note the importance of reforming youths from drug abuse and providing assistance to the NGO. This would enable it achieve its goal of reforming the youth, he said.
"The biggest challenge is to visit the more than 2000 youths from time to time and give them an alternative means of generating income. In this way they would not be tempted to go back to using drugs," he explained.
Youths from Msamvu, Boma Road, Sultan Area and Gofu areas expressed appreciation to the NGO for making them reform. They appealed to the Government to provide financial assistance to the NGO to enable it reform more youths addicted to drug abuse.
Apart from reforming the youths, Safina-Okoa has also been assisting them with starting small income generating projects.
