South Africa: 'Missing' Roberts Back at Santos

Wayne Roberts, the 31-year-old Santos goalkeeper, has returned to the People's Team after a prolonged absence from the club during which time no one knew of his whereabouts, including coach David Bright.

The former Amaglug-glug, Cape Town Spurs and Wits University star, who has courted controversy throughout his career, recently decided to put on his well-worn gloves again, and according to Santos' COO Edries Burton, has been back in training for 'two weeks'.

"Wayne has a bit of history," he says, without elaborating.

"But the whole thing has been blown out of proportion. He got married to Mandy and went away to sort his life out. There is no chance that he's on drugs, as some people have suggested. He played the whole of last season.

"We would never have played Wayne if he wasn't clean. Santos has a system of keeping regular tabs on all of our players," Burton added.
