The 2008/2009 academic year for the John Paul II Institute of Theology, JOPASIT, has been launched.

The Bishop of Buea, the founder of the institute, Mgr. Immanuel Bushu, launched the school year Saturday, September 27, with a solemn Mass at St. Charles Lwanga Catholic Church Molyko, Buea.In his homily, Bishop Bushu said JOPASIT is out to help people know God. "We want to be like Him, to be holy and everything will be possible," the Prelate said.

"Those who want to challenge the present educational system that considers religion as a waste of time - then JOPASIT is meant for you. JOPASIT stands for a world-view that is not temporal, selfish or materialistic, but eternal," Fr. George Nkeze Jingwa, JOPASIT Director, said.

According to Nkeze, JOPASIT is basically to know God and to serve him faithfully. "JOPASIT is out to project a different kind of thinking, to reclaim our lost African education legacy whose primary purpose was to build for eternity. Those who want to show that it is noble to develop an African education system that puts spiritual aims at the pinnacle of the education process - then JOPASIT is for you," he said.

Nkeze prescribed JOPASIT for those who see knowledge of God and growth in their relationship with God as the primary goal of life. "JOPASITANS are those who believe that knowing God and striving to live the life of God is a noble thing to do," he noted.

Nkeze will hesitate to make an assessment of JOPASIT one year after but captured what the students think. "They appreciate the institute and their spiritual lives have experienced a significant change. They have come to know God better. In our society, many people don't know the God they serve and if you don't know the God you serve, your services to Him will yield no fruits. Those leaving this year are very satisfied."

Nkeze added that there is something new for the 2008/2009 academic year. "We're introducing Psychology and Distance-Learning into our schedule." The JOPASIT Director reassured that the necessary inputs to make his institution tick are available. These include; fine-quality teaching staff, well equipped and up-to-date library.

October 6, classes for the new school year will take off, while construction works for the new site is also being intensified. The solemn inaugural of the new school year also witnessed the launching of the institution's maiden edition of a journal christened JOPASIT JOURNAL and the graduation of first cycle students.
