Nigeria: Lagos PDP Elders Dissociate Selves From 57 LGs

30 September 2008

Lagos — Lagos State PDP Elders Advisory Council yesterday warned party members of the danger of participating in the forthcoming "illegal 57 local government elections in Lagos State," as directed by its factional leader, Chief Olabode George.

The elders include, Senator Wahab Dosunmu, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, Mrs Modupe Sasore, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, Chief Rafiu Jafofo, Alhaji M. M. Ashorobi, Senator Kofo Bucknor Akerele, Honourable Kamal O. Olorunoje, Chief Wale Mogaji and Dr Adesola Taiwo among others.

The Elders Advisory Council, at a meeting in Ikeja, yesterday, said the sole decision taken by George faction to field candidates in 57 local government on behalf of the party, contravenes the stand of PDP national leadership.

Attorney General of the Federation and Speaker of House of Representatives, Honourable Dimeji Bankole have described the action as illegal. The Elders specifically drew attention to illegality of the process of the election as outlined by Lagos State government, adding that George' s action does not have the support of majority of party members. The Elders said the party is in court over the issue of the election, hence it is irresponsible and unjustified for its candidates to participate in the so-called illegal election.
