Nigeria: U.S. Restates Commitment to Anti-Malaria Programme

Kwara — US Ambassador to Nigeria, Robin Renee Sanders, has reaffirmed the committment of the United States to combating malaria in Nigeria.

She highlighted that US government policy on the health sector is to partner with Nigeria's federal, state and local governments in combating malaria and other health issues such as HIV/ AIDS.

Ambassador Sanders stated this in Ilorin at the flag- off of the "Malaria- Free Kwara Program". She said her government's commitment to the cause, was exemplified in 2007 when the government distributed and sold more than 3.5 million insecticide- treated nets in Nigeria.

According to her, the US Mission in Nigeria and the US Agency for International Development (USAID), is working closely with local and international partners to train health workers on the proper use of intermittent, preventative treatment for pregnant women, social mobilization, malaria education, training on the uses and benefits of insecticide- treated nets, and other health preventive measures on behalf of the American people.

A press release detailing the event stated that the visit also provided an opportunity to build partnerships with the senior leaders of Kwara State.

During the visit, Ambassador Sanders discussed opportunities for continued US engagement with Kwara State in the healthcare, agriculture and education sectors.
