Namibia/Zimbabwe: Warriors Go for Broke

30 September 2008

Windhoek — Former Brave Warriors skipper Henrico Botes has been included in coach Tom Saintfiet's 20-member squad for Namibia's match of convenience against Zimbabwe in the 2010 FIFA World Cup final qualifier at Windhoek's Independence Stadium on the 11th of next month.

Botes makes his eagerly awaited return to international football after the lanky goal poacher was sidelined by an assortment of circumstances beyond his control.

The former Ramblers target man, who now plies his trade with Platinum Stars in the South African Professional Soccer League (PSL), has been laid low by a career threatening knee injury while his international career was abruptly disrupted by a harsh six-match suspension from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The usually cool as a cucumber striker was made to pay dearly for his moment of madness when he retaliated at an Ethiopian opponent, who ungentlemanly spat at him during the Brave Warriors opening match for the 2008 AFCON qualifiers.

As widely expected, Saintfiet has retained the bulk of the team that did duty against Kenya with the exception of injured midfield workhorse Oliver Risser and of course the self-inflicted suspension of wayward striker Costa Khaiseb.

Eleven Arrows' pocket sized midfield cum striker Muna Katupose and Blue Waters burly defender Gottlieb Nakuta are also back in the fold after the pair were left in the cold for the Kenyan trip.

The squad reads as follows:

Athiel Mbaha, Paulus Shaningayamwe, George Hummel, HartmanToromba, Richard Gariseb, Steven Goagab, Gottlieb Nakuta, Jamunovandu Ngatjizeko, Sydney Plaatjies, Ivan Namaseb, Paulus Shipanga, Quinton Jacobs, Meraai Swartbooi, Colin Benjamin, Rudi Louw, Rudolph Bester, Lazarus Kaimbi, Muna Katupose, Wilko Risser and Henrico Botes.
