TELECOM Namibia launched a wireless pre-paid 3G mobile high-speed data service at the end of last week.
The package comes with free activation, 100 megabytes (MB) of free downloads with a usage tariff of N$1.30 per MB and a one-off pre-paid package costing N$1 749.
The service is based on Evolution-Data Optimised (EVDO) Rev A technology.
"All the users have to do is buy a wireless modem and the pre-paid fast Internet access will be available without a contract and without a credit check," said Telecom spokesman Oiva Angula.
The pre-paid 3G EVDO gives subscribers wireless access from their computers and laptops to the Internet.
"Staying competitive in today's market means recognising and delivering the products, tools and resources that are important to the marketplace," said Armando Perny, Telecom's Senior Manager for Product Research and Development.
"Our Pre-paid 3G EVDO service will give our customers high-speed mobile service.
Over time, our customers will be able to enjoy the freedom and mobility to stay connected with the convenience and reliability of our prepaid service nationwide," Perny added.
Rev A adds significantly faster upload speeds.
Telecom has upgraded its CDMA data network from EVDO Revision 0 to Revision A in many towns around the country already, including Windhoek, Otjiwarongo, Tsumeb, Keetmans, Walvis, Swakop, Oshakati, Ongwediva, Rosh Pinah, Grootfontein and Oranjemund.
More sites with 3G EVDO capabilities are being rolled out.
The company has invested N$50 million in the deployment of the CDMA technology that allows for the provision of mobile SWITCH voice and data services in the country.
