Kampala — THE Bell Pearl of Africa Music (PAM) Awards might still be a couple of weeks away, but there is still some business to take care of before the annual gala is held at the Lugogo Cricket Oval grounds.
On Thursday night, the PAM Awards management threw a bash for this year's nominees at Silk Royale. Not all the 164 nominees honoured the invitations, but that was their loss because those who did were treated to an evening full of Bell beer, snacks and some dazzling performances.
There was also a short speech from the awards organising committee chairman, Isaac Mulindwa, who implored media houses not to present their predictions as the official and final PAM Awards results, just like one local daily did two years ago. "That's wrong," he remarked.
A night like this one would not be considered fulfiling without some amazing performances, considering the number of musicians who were present.
So, after Mulindwa's speech, Omulangira Suuna crept on stage and straight into a cover of Enrique Iglesias' Hero. Then there was the defiant trio of Borne Ugandans, who came to tell us why the Police is appaling, before taking on Abalaalo (herdsmen). Jekaki Band's Aziza drew much applause with two of his latest tracks.
Other performers included the mischievous former Blu3 star, Cinderella Sanyu, the Obsessions breakaway duo of Hellen and Brenda, Sylvia Namugenyi, Boys in September, Phina Mugerwa and the new all-girl group, Wafagio.
And, for the first time, artistes received nomination certificates as they left.
