South Africa: Ajax Out to Make Amends Today

1 October 2008

Bloemfontein Celtic's new coach Mich D'Avray will have his back to the wall when the Free Staters take on Ajax Cape Town at Athlone Stadium tonight.

Kick-off is at 20h00.

Ajax are heading into the match off the back of a disappointing 2-0 loss at the hands of Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday evening at Loftus Stadium in Tshwane.

The Urban Warriors threw away the points as they hit the Amakhosi's woodwork three times in the game and conceded two late goals to suffer their first defeat of the league season.

Phunya Sele Sele, who sit two up from bottom of the log after three games, finally managed to collect a point when they held visiting Maritzburg United to a goalless draw at the weekend.

They had previously suffered defeats at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns and Thanda Royal Zulu in their first two matches.

The teams have met on 12 previous occasions in the Premier Soccer League and their head-to-head record shows that neither side has had the better of the other since Ajax's formation in 1999/2000.

Both teams have won four league games against each other, with four draws making up the remainder of their dozen encounters.

The Cape side has scored more goals in the process, 18 to Celtic's 14.

Craig Rosslee's men will be keen to get back to their winning ways and D'Avray will need to pay special attention to the Urban Warriors danger men, striker Mabhudi Khenyeza who missed a number of easy chances against his old club Amakhosi, and the likes of Sifiso Vilakazi, Scott Granwald and Sameehg Doutie.
