South Africa: Tight Contests in Voda Leagues

1 October 2008

The number of unbeaten Vodacom Second Division sides countrywide is slowly diminishing as the season progresses, however, the KZN stream still significantly, has five clubs which fall into this category.

They are Newcastle Sicilians, Rangers, Island FC, Sobantu Shooting Stars and the once famous PSL outfit African Wanderers.

And with just a single point separating the top four, this league certainly looks like being one of the most competitive.

In the Western Cape, leaders Steenburg United, who finished last season in fourth place, have won all six of their opening matches, scoring 14 goals and only conceding two. The other two undefeated sides are second-placed Baltic Rangers and Battswood.

Barberton City Stars and Batau, who both reached the play-offs a few months ago, seem set for another good season in Mpumalanga.

Stars defeated ELB Movers 2-0, while Batau thrashed Witbank Manchester 5-0 as these two high flyers managed to maintain their unbeaten records for another week.

Second-placed Mighty Mega Stars are also in with a shout; they defeated Mologadi 4-1 away from home to bring their goal tally to 16 after eight matches.

Peace Lovers are the only side yet to lose in Limpopo; they easily beat Masemola Diarora 4-1 to keep their promotion hopes alive, although other top teams like Baroka, Manenzhe Liverpool and The Dolphins cannot be discounted at this early stage.

In the Eastern Cape, following Tembu Royals' 1-0 loss to Matatiele Professionals, all their sides have tasted defeat. And this stream looks like it is going to go down to the wire with the top three, Blackburn Rovers, Bay Academy and Bush Bucks all sharing the same number of points.

Although Gauteng's Highlands Park have yet to lose this season, they have drawn six out of seven matches and find themselves well adrift of Lusitano, City Tigers and M-Tigers.
