1 October 2008

Luanda — Luanda will host an international meeting on management of haemorrhages during pregnancy, delivery and post-delivery, from October 13-14 this year, as part of the effort to improve maternal and neo-natal health care in the continent.

About 200 national and foreign delegates will attend the meeting, including the World Health Organisation director for Africa, Angolan Luís Gomes Sambo.

The meeting will mainly look into a world vision on the causes of mothers and new born babies death, priority in intervention and aid for prevention and management of haemorrhage during pregnancy, delivery and post-delivery.

The agenda for the meeting includes the presentation of studies, research and sharing of experiences on the issue among African countries.

The participants will also discuss the role and responsibility of governments, training institutions and health associations in outlining strategies and creating essential skills for assistance to women during pregnancy, delivery and post-delivery.

Angola will present to the event its experience from two maternity hospitals of reference, Lucrécia Paim and Augusto Ngangula, in the control of haemorrhages during pregnancy, delivery and post-delivery.

The meeting is expected to produce recommendations on priority actions in the domain of training and services, for the reduction of maternal and perinatal death caused by haemorrhage.

WHO, Unicef, Unfpa and World Bank updated data show that despite effort to improve maternal health in the continent, the rates of maternal death (900 deaths per 1,000 newborn babies) remain the world's highest.

The data indicate as well that Africa managed to reduce maternal death by 0,1 percent in 2005.

In Africa south of Sahara, haemorrhages top the list of maternal death causes, responding for more than one third (35 percent).
