Kenya: Momanyi to Defend Gucha Title

1 October 2008

Nairobi — Africa 5,000 metres bronze medallist and national cross country champion, Grace Momanyi, is expected to make an appearance to defend her title at Friday's Gucha Simu ya Jamii 10-kilometre road race.

The race will take place in Ogembo town where Hilary Bii and Caroline Chepkwony will continue their bids for the Safaricom Gusii Golden Series jackpot award.

The Gucha race is the second in the three-race Safaricom Gusii Golden Series which started with the Kisii M-Pesa 10km race in Kisii town last month and which will conclude with the Safaricom Kebirigo 10km race in Nyamira district on November 7.

Besides the cash awards available at each of the three races in the annual series, the most consistent man and woman runner in the three races will walk away with a Sh50,000 jackpot on offer from sponsors, Safaricom.

Momanyi is back in Kisii after a roller-coaster season and could enter the fray on Friday at the meet to be presided over by Athletics Kenya secretary general David Okeyo.

"Many elite athletes currently training in Kisii, including Momanyi, are expected for the race along with others from as far as Ngong, Iten and Eldoret," Athletics Kenya's Nyanza South chairman, Peter Angwenyi, said on Wednesday.

Momanyi missed the Kisii leg as she was in Europe for a series of Grand Prix races.

The top five finishers in Gucha on Friday will also get complimentary entries to this month's Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon, each worth Sh1,000.

Bii won the Kisii race in a time of 35 minutes, 54 seconds while Kericho's Chepkwony, a former Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon champion, won the women's race on the tough, hilly course in 42.30.

The winners in both the men's and women's races will take Sh15,000 and a bull, the runners up Sh7,500 and a goat and the third-placed finishers Sh3,000 and a sack of maize.

The Safaricom Gusii Golden Series is an annual competition organised by the Kebirigo Athletics Club.
