South Africa: Pienaar Set to Make Season Bow

2 October 2008

Steven Pienaar is set to make his first appearance of the season for Everton tonight after a frustrating seven-week spell on the sidelines through injury.

The Bafana Bafana midfielder broke his toe in a pre-season friendly against Dutch side PSV Eindhoven on August 9 and has not featured for The Toffees since.

But he is in the squad to face Standard Liege in a Uefa Cup tie this evening in Belgium, much to the delight of his manager David Moyes.

"We've missed Steven. He's been out for seven weeks now and we're hoping to have him involved on Thursday," Moyes says. "He made a big impression on us last year and I'm hoping he will do the same for us this year."

Everton face a stern test in Liege after a 2-2 draw in the first leg at Goodison Park handed the Belgian side two vital away goals.

The boost for Pienaar and Everton comes towards the end of a tumultuous week in which the Westbury-born star voluntarily handed himself over to police after an alleged assault incident at his home in the early hours of Sunday morning, only for the charges to be dropped on Tuesday.
