Liberia: President Celebrates Holidays With Chinese And Muslims

1 October 2008

Monrovia — President Johnson Sirleaf has paid tribute to the Government of the People's Republic of China for its continuous support to Liberia's reconstruction. The President stressed that Sino-Liberian relations continue to yield dividends for Liberia. President Johnson Sirleaf spoke Wednesday at the Monrovia City Hall where she participated in the 59th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China.

For his part, Chinese envoy to Liberia, His Excellency Zhou Yuxiao, praised the Johnson Sirleaf Administration for its efforts in building a new Liberia. He further committed his government's support to Liberia's development efforts.

Wednesday's program marking China's 59th Anniversary was attended by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Cabinet Ministers, members of the diplomatic corps and other senior Government officials.

In another development, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has called on Liberians to participate in the process of nation building. Muslims and Christians, the President noted, all have rights and responsibilities to the state.

According to an Executive Mansion release, the President spoke Wednesday in Paynesville city, on the outskirts of Monrovia, where she participated in a program organized by the National Mandingo Caucus to mark the end of the Holy Month of Ramadan. The President spoke of the many challenges facing the country, but said those challenges can be overcome only if Liberians live in a spirit of togetherness.

The Liberian leader reiterated her determination to work to return some Muslims to their home counties of Nimba and Lofa. The residents fled their counties as a result of the Civil War. The President was responding to a request by former Ambassador Jallah Kamara, a member of the National Mandingo Caucus.
