Angola: Governor Defends Children's Rights

2 October 2008

Lobito — The governor of central Benguela province, Dumilde Rangel, on Wednesday highlighted, in Lobito city, the joining of actions towards defending children's rights, amongst the government, civil society and other institutions that work in favour of minors.

The official, who was speaking at the closing of the workshop on children's problems, an initiative of the International Children's Pastoral, exhorted institutions specialised in projects of protecting minors to plan their actions with anticipation.

To Dumilde Rangel, the anticipated planning of actions enables the government and its social partners to find ways of financial or material assistance to projects aimed at solving problems of the child.

On her turn, the co-ordinator of the International Children's Pastoral, the Brazilian Zilda Arns Neurmam, said that she hopes that Angola's economic development can be reflected in the lives of children.

To the founder of the organisation (Children's Pastoral), governments and businessmen can only have success in their economic projects if the society is free of delinquents.

This viewpoint was shared by the Bishop Emeritus of Benguela, Don 'scar Braga, to whom children should be at the centre of the attentions of governments, churches, businessmen and of the whole society.

The International Children's Pastoral, founded in Brazil over 20 years ago through the Catholic Church, is specialised in projects of grating education and health conditions of disadvantaged minors. It is represented in 17 countries worldwide.

In Benguela, the organisation caters for at least 3,850 children.
