Nigeria: Wamakko to Probe Pilgrims Agency

Sokoto state government has set up a 4 – man commission of Inquiry to probe the activities of the Pilgrims Welfare Agency (PWA), State /Local Governments joint account system as well as the Water Resources Ministry.

LEADERSHIP gathered that, the commission which has four weeks to complete its assignment has as its chairman, Alhaji Aminu Ahmed, the chairman of the Law Reform Commission.

Other members of the commission of enquiry are: Alhaji Bello Mu'azu and Alhaji Abubakar Gidado while the Director (EXCO) Alhaji Dahiru Abbas is its secretary.

LEADERSHIP, was informed that, the members of the commission were sworn in by the Justice Commissioner, Alhaji Inuwa Abdulkadir on behalf of Governor Aliyu Wamakko.

Wamakko said at the event that, the exercise was not meant at witchhunting anybody but rather to instill honesty, accountability and transparency in expending public funds.

The governor added: "the commission is to examine the various books of the three establishments to determine the appropriateness and propriety of transactions into the accounts".

He also added that, the state government was not unmindful of "certain irregularities that occurred during the last administration".

"We want to follow the rule of law and due process in establishing the irregularities", he explained, adding that, the appointment of the members was based on merit and their personal records of service.

Wamakko also urged the members to discharge their responsibilities with the absolute fear of God, fairness and justice.

"Please ensure justice and fair play in your findings and conclusions of the report", Governor Wamakko admonished the members.
