Anyako — The National Director of HIV/AIDS Education, Dr. Acquai Addo, has assured soldiers of regular education on HIV/AIDS in the country, to ensure that the personnel are well-equipped with the necessary knowledge about the disease, to enable them lead healthy lifestyles.
He said such education on HIV/AIDS was crucial for the soldiers, in view of the nature of the work they do, like embarking on peace-keeping missions, it was important for the soldiers to know how they could be infected and preventive measures, to enable them to protect themselves at all times.
Dr. Addo, who was addressing a closing ceremony of soldiers at the 66 Artillery Regiment, after a one-week training workshop on HIV/AIDS and preventive measures, noted that it was important that people who could not control their sexual desires, use condoms at all times, in order to prevent catching the disease.
He said annual support would be given to the 66 Artillery Regiment, which he pointed out was the first Regiment in the country to formally organise education on the HIV/AIDS disease, noting that 265,000 people in Ghana were living with HIV/AIDS, and that out of every one hundred persons, one was affected by the disease.
The Medical Superintendent at the Volta Regional Hospital, Dr. Geoffrey Nyamuame, commended the officers and men of the 66 Artillery, for their regular donation of blood to the hospital, which contributed immensely to the development of the institution.
The Commanding Officer of the 66 Artillery, Lt. Col. Emmanuel Kotia, said the personnel were ready to go through any form of education on the HIV/AIDS disease, and appealed to the Educational Directorate on the disease, to establish a counseling and testing unit at the Regiment.
