Uganda: Namakula is Rated At Open

The Standard Chartered Bank sponsored Uganda Ladies Amateur Golf Open tees off at the par-72 Uganda Golf Club Kitante course today. Uganda's queen of the greens Flavia Namakula is the odds on favourite to win her maiden title this year considering her current form.

The 23-year-old Namakula won the Kenya Ladies Strokeplay Open beating last year's Uganda Ladies Open winner Mary Karano of Kenya by the narrowest of margins - one shot early. Her recent good run should give her the impetus to do better considering the fact that she also won this week's Club Nite competition with 19 points.

Uganda's other new sensation, 15-year-old Meron Kyomugisha plus the witty Jasper Kamukama, Monica Ntege, Eva Okatch,, Jenina Nasimolo, Esther Okullo (last Ugandan to win in 2003) and former hat-trick winner Alice Kego will also bare their fangs for the next three days as they try to wrestle back the Open and halt the four-year foreigners' dominance.

"I think I'm playing well. The home support will be crucial. It is going to be tough though as better players have come this time round," Namakula said after her last practice round yesterday evening. Kenyans have won the last two editions.
