South Africa: Hendricks Not Rushing Come-Back

3 October 2008

Bidvest Wits defender Ashraf Hendricks says he is sticking to the doctor's orders as he completes the recovery cycle on the calf injury that has forced him to sit out of training for the past week.

Hendricks limped off in last week's 1-0 win over Free State Stars with a calf injury after 55 minutes and had to be replaced by Phil Evans.

However, he revealed that he will be back in training next week.

"Though reality has it that injuries are a part of the game, they are, however, always a setback. In the game against Free State Stars, I picked up the strain in the first half and could feel it was really pulling.

"I then went out and they tried to strap it, thinking it was something minor, but it didn't help because I was still struggling. Then just minutes into the second half I was substituted as I could feel there was no way I could continue.

"I went for a scan where it was ascertained what the actual problem was. With the rest that I have had, I can feel the injury is now getting better and I should be back at training on Monday. With a muscle injury, it needs rest and the risk of rushing back is never worth it because it could then be stressed and turn to be worse. So I am following the doctor's advice all the time," says Hendricks.

The 24-year-old has been an aura of influence at the back for Wits over the last two years, rising to become one of the most consistent players at the club.

In the absence of Hendricks, left-footed defender Junaid Mashamaite was switched to the centre from the left in Wednesday night's win over Platinum Stars.
