The first phase of developing the long-awaited Ndonga Linena agricultural project in the Kavango Region finally commenced late in September.
The project has been delayed for the past six years.
The Ndonga Linena project is located about 130km east of Rundu in the Ndiyona Constituency.
It was debushed in 2003, and has a water pump station already erected at the site.
It is one of the first projects in the region that were identified by the government as part of its Green Scheme projects.
Physical developments at the project site were initially expected to start in September last year, but had to be put on hold because no suitable candidate who would serve as service provider for the project was found by then.
The Chief Agricultural Extension Technician for Eastern Kavango, Alex Endunde, told Nampa yesterday that 25 people were employed and have begun digging holes for the irrigation pipes.
Endunde said the construction of houses that would accommodate about 21 small-scale farmers who would work on the project, would start sometime this year, but could not give the exact date of commencement.
The Ndonga Linena agricultural project that covers an area of about 800 hectares is set to accommodate about 21 small-scale farmers.
There are currently five Green Scheme agricultural projects in the Kavango region: Shadikongoro, Shitemo, Mashare, Uvhungu Vhungu and Musese projects.
