A pipe, October 1, that exploded in the fermentation section of the Les Brasseries du Cameroun Bafoussam factory, killed two workers of "Camerounaise Metallurgie Travaux Services, CMTS, the brewery's service provider.

Reports say two of the workers - Richard Kanoud and Julius Ntah were repairing the pipe went it blasted off, killing the two and merely shocking the third, whose name was gotten only as Kingue. It was not immediately clear as to what caused the explosion.

CMTS is specialised in providing technical services like welding, repair work on pipes and tanks as well as Les Brasseries installations. In the wake of the accident, the General Manager of Les Brasseries du Cameroun, Andre Siaka, granted a press conference at the headquarters of the company in Douala.

He said an enquiry was already underway in Bafoussam to find out what caused the accident, and thus it would be premature for him or anybody to indulge in hypotheses.

The General Manager would not also talk about the competence of the workers who were assigned to do the job. He noted that the trio were not workers of his company, but rather those of CMTS.

Thus, Les Brasseries was not in a position to talk about them. He, however, said CMTS has been working for Les Brasseries Du Cameroun as service provider for long, at the company's factories in different parts of the country.

Asked about possible compensation to the family of the deceased workers, Siaka said though it was too early to start talking about compensation, there was no question about such a thing.

He said Les Brasseries du Cameroun has certain conditions which each and every one of its service providers must regularly comply with, for them to continue to do work for the company.

He said one of such conditions is that a service provider must register all its workers with the National Social Insurance Fund, NSIF. So he said the two CMTS workers, were registered with the Fund, which is obliged in such a situation to pay compensation.
