Kampala — UGANDA telecom has disconnected Internet services at Makerere University for the third time in a period of less than two years.
This time, the university owes over sh200m.
The money, according to a member of the university council, accumulated over three months.
"We have not had internet for the last three days," a source at the university told The New Vision on Friday.
Some officials of the Senate, the institution's academic decision-making organ and the Faculty of Arts opted to conduct their work from internet cafes in Wandegeya, near the university campus.
"We have cleared the debt and expect the internet to be re-connected very soon," Makerere's publicist Gilbert Kadilo said.
Last year, the university's internet was disconnected in July over a sh900m debt and in October over sh600m.
The university council in 2007 passed a decision to charge an annual ICT fee of sh50,000 from undergraduates and sh80,000 from postgraduate students.
However, private students, led by the Uganda Young Democrats mobilisers, petitioned Parliament over the fees. The social services committee is handling the case.
