Uganda: New Garbage Firm Starts Operations

Kampala — A new garbage collection and recycling company has opened shop in Kampala. The Great Waste and Recycling Foundation Ltd, will concentrate in the city centre, the managing director, Ali Kigongo, said.

"We have come to professionalise garbage collection.

"We are going to start by sensitising the public about the dangers of garbage and how best to keep and collect it. We shall start with commercial buildings and go to private residences later," he said.

Kigongo said the garbage collection and recycling company was a joint venture between two Ugandans and a Danish businessman.

He said Kampalans have been suffering with garbage because, it's recklessly littered even by some garbage collectors who don't have the right facilities. He said they intend to supply over 460 plastic wheeled garbage bins to various commercial buildings in Kampala to ease collection.

"The company two trucks and intends to get more," he said.

Meanwhlie, Kigongo has alleged that Nabugabo Updeal Joint Ventures, a rival garbage firm, has confiscated 132 plastic garbage containers they had placed at various buildings in the city centre.

He said they took the containers from Ivory Plaza, Sunset Arcade, Majestci Plaza.

"Nabugabo should understand that we are in a free market economy where competition is inevitable," he said.

However, Abu Ssonko, the Nabugabo project manager, dismissed the allegation as baseless.
