Uganda: MTN Zone Pushes Usage 70 Percent

Kampala — MTN usage has increased by 70% over the past two months, Erik van Veen, the chief commercial officer, has said. Van Veen said the rise was due to the MTN Zone tariff system launched over two months back.

"MTN Zone subscribers have now hit over two million, which represents 60% of the MTN customer base.

"There has also been a 70% increase in call usage since its introduction."

He added that as a result, MTN Zone has been made a permanent feature in the MTN product portfolio.

"The MTN Zone tariff was also introduced in Ghana and Swaziland where MTN also operates, but Uganda has been the most successful with a record of 200,000 customers per day," van Veen said.

The average discount during the day was 40% on and 80% in the evenings.

The increase of traffic, he said, was now at three million minutes per day from 1.7 million minutes per day.

Van Veen said many MTN subscribers were making more calls across networks because of the savings they made during the promotion.

"MTN is creating more capacity to accommodate more subscribers so as not to compromise on the quality of the service," he said.
