Zambia: UPND Seeks to Revamp Road Network

4 October 2008

UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) president, Hakainde Hichilema has bemoaned the poor state of the Sesheke-Senanga Road and promised to improve the road infrastructure in Western Province if elected president.

Speaking when he addressed a public rally in Senanga yesterday, Mr Hichilema said that as a result of the poor road network, investors were shunning Western Province and Senanga in particular.

Mr Hichilema further said that the UPND was not happy that the Kalongola Pontoon on the Zambezi River has not been reliable saying the only solution was to construct a bridge.

He, therefore, promised the electorate that once elected, he would ensure that a bridge was constructed to replace the Kalongola Pontoon.

Mr Hichilema further said that once elected, he would ensure that the road infrastructure in the area was improved.

The opposition leader accused the MMD Government of neglecting the area and urged the people not to give the party another chance but ensure that the UPND emerged victorious.

"The MMD has neglected you for a long time and why should they continue to be in power. If you want development ensure that you vote wisely," Mr Hichilema said.

He also complained that it was regrettable that most retirees had still not been paid their dues and some had died even before receiving their dues.

Mr Hichilema said that the UPND would look into the welfare of retirees and ensure that they were paid on time.

Mr Hichilema said that the UPND was consistent with its policies of offering free education from primary school up to university level as well as medical services.

He pledged to improve conditions of service for teachers, police and health workers, among others.
