Bauchi — Bauchi state government has spent a staggering sum of N3 Billion on the renovation and upgrading of its 18 secondary schools spread across the state, the commissioner of education, Alhaji Yusuf Musa Gar has disclosed.
The commissioner told journalist at a media briefing that the government embarked on the total renovation and upgrading of the schools after a critical assessment of the state of the educational infrastructure in the state. He said contract for the complete renovation and upgrading of GDSS Sade was awarded at over N398 Million, that of GDSS Warji at over N230 Million and GTC Gadau at over N744 Million.
The commissioner said budgetary allocation to education in the state had increased tremendously from N2.6 Billion in 2007 to over N6.6 Billion in 2008 representing an increase of about 250% as well as an additional supplementary budget of N3.8 Billion raising allocation to the sector to about N10 Billion in 2008.
He said in the year 2009 the ministry intends to tackle the problems of Grade ii Teachers by introducing the pivotal teacher training programme while about one thousand Grade ii teachers would be taking in a two-year NCE programme.
Alhaji Gar said the ministry also intends to rehabilitate the printing unit of the Education Resource Center, the accreditation of courses at all its Technical Colleges and the provision of standard workshops and laboratories in the colleges among others within the year.
