Nigeria: 2008 Elections - Yar'Adua is Dishonest - Isyaku Ibrahim Insists PDP Leadership Lacks Credibility

Leading G-34 politician and founding member of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Ishyaku Ibrahim, has described President Umaru Yar'adua as a dishonest person who should not have asumed presidency in the first instance.

He also insists that he would not recognise the present leadership of the PDP.

Reacting to the 48th independence anniversary speech of President Yar'adua that he would not adopt quick-fix and short-cuts in tackling Nigeria's challenges, Ibrahim said yesterday in Abuja that the president should have told Nigerians that he cannot find quick solutions to their yearnings.

"First of all, Umaru Yar'adua is totally dishonest. An honourable man cannot sit down on a faulty seat and think he would correct it. If he wanted to correct it, he would have announced to this country, that listen, this election was faulty, therefore I would not be president of this country."

"He (Yar'adua) has accepted that the elections were flawed. Therefore, since he is sitting on a wrong seat, he cannot make a correction."

He said, "Why they are trying to play with words that he is fixing Nigeria and that he cannot be too fast, he is being dishonest. He should have told Nigerians that 'if he become the president, you have to exercise patience with me because I am Mr. Go Slow, Nigerians would have made their own choice.

"Under his leadership as the president of this country, people are still stealing money, which is meant for ordinary 'talaka' for the development of the people.

While saying that the present leadership of the PDP lacks credibility, he said, "Who are the people you are talking about, because I do not know their credibility. Who are they? I know they have a chairman, but he is not credible. He does not believe in democracy. If he believes in democracy, he would not have accepted that kangaroo governance, coming out to say that they are on consensus. They do not understand the meaning of democracy.

"There were more than five, six people who were vying to be the national chairman of the party. They were not given the opportunity. We are talking about democracy. You do not deny people their own fundamental human right to exercise their own right and you call yourself a democrat."
