Zimbabwe: U.S.$64 000 Stolen in Daylight Robbery

3 October 2008

Harare — FOUR daring armed robbers broke into a Waterfalls home in broad daylight and stole US$64 000, R60 000, cellphones and household goods on Tuesday.

Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector James Sabau said the robbery occurred at around 11am when the suspects drove to the house in a white Mercedes Benz.

"The gang found a housemaid and a nephew of the householder watering the lawn outside the gate and asked if the owner was home," he said.

They forced the two into the house, found the owner away, and then produced knives and pistols before locking up the maid in the toilet and the nephew in the lounge.

The four then ransacked the house and loaded their first loot -- a 36-inch LG colour TV set, a five-changer Philips CD/radio, a three-changer Aiwa CD/radio and carpets - into their Benz.

They went on to break into the main bedroom where they stole a pistol from a gun cabinet, certificates, two Nokia cellphones - an N70 and a 3310 - US$64 000 and R60 000.

The gang released the maid before driving off.

The maid unlocked the sitting room where the nephew was and the two went to town to inform the owner of the house.

A report was made three hours later at Harare Central Police Station. Insp Sabau said investigations were still in progress and urged people to have police or their nearest police station's phone numbers readily available.

"In this case, a report was made three hours later, which makes it difficult for the police to make a follow-up given that one could easily drive to Mutare in those three hours," he said.

He said police are looking for Norest Chikunyuwa for questioning in connection with the incident and anyone with information about him should contact the nearest police station or CID Homicide.
