Kampala — THE Kibaale District Security Committee has granted bodaboda riders a six months grace period to register all motorcycles that were smuggled into the country from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In a meeting recently, the Deputy RDC Kibaale, Catherine Kamwine, directed the Police to stop impounding motorcycles from bodaboda cyclists and other business people until the set period.
Kamwine also ordered all companies that deal in motorcycles to immediately provide number plates, warning that failure to comply would lead to cancellation of their licences and prosecution in the courts of law.
She said the motorcycles that were being used illegally without being registered by the Uganda Revenue Authority and were, therefore, a security threat.
Senke motorcycles that are illegally imported from Congo are sold between sh1m and sh1.25m, unlike the legally registered motorcycles that cost over sh1.7m.
It is estimated that over 2,000 unregistered motorcycles are operating in Kibaale, especially in the bodaboda business.
Kamwine warned traffic officers not to harass the cyclists since they have been given the period to register.
According to the Police crime report of 2007, unregistered motorcycles have been involved in theft and accidents.
