Kampala — ZAMBIAN teenager Melissa Nawa shot six over 78 in the second to go one stroke clear in the Uganda Ladies Golf Open at Kitante yesterday.
Sixteen-year-old Nawa who shared top spot in the opening round with Tanzanian teenager Hawa Wanyeche broke the tie after the Tanzania shot 79 yesterday.
Nawa, who started playing golf at the age of six at Lusaka Golf Club, was unhappy with her score despite maintaining the lead.
"I am targeting a much better score tomorrow (today). I am not pleased with my game so far. The greens here are not as good as the ones at home. I normally play two over on any course. I hope I do so in the last round," the soft spoken Nawa told Sunday Vision.
Defending champion Mary Karano of Kenya, seeking a third straight victory improved on her first round score by two strokes to keep within reach of the in-form teenagers in the Standard Chartered Bank sponsored 54 holes tournament. Karano goes into the decisive round today just three strokes behind the leader.
Ugandans Eva Okatch and Monica Ntege are nine and 10 shots off the pace respectively. Petra Nalwoga (166) and Flavia Namakula (169) who was widely regarded a favourite before the tournament is virtually out of contention.
