Nigeria: Gwegwe Fears for Nwosu

6 October 2008

Former chairman of Bayelsa United, Kali Gwegwe says he fears that Henry Nwosu may go for over aged players to succeed with the Under-17 team.

Nwosu was recently appointed head coach of Nigeria's Under-17 national team, the golden Eaglets after Alphonsus Dike was sacked by the NFF.

Gwegwe told KickOffNigeria.com though he was not surprised when Dike's sack was announced, he feared that Nwosu may do something untoward to impress his bosses and Nigerians.

"Dike travelled all around Nigeria to pick what he called the best players yet he failed in his first match so he deserved nothing less than the sack because he was given free hands to pick his team." Gwegwe said.

"I however have my fears for the new man in charge of the team. This is because Henry Nwosu is an intelligent man. He must have read when Dike said he lost to Benin because his boys were young and inexperienced.

"Is it possible that Nwosu may be tempted to go for very experienced players who may likely be over aged and consequently attract penalties from CAF and FIFA?"

Gwegwe told KickOffNigeria.com that Nwosu should be given enough support to enable him to succeed.

"I will suggest that Nwosu be given enough support to enable him groom players he will use during the world championship Nigeria would host next year. The support can be in the form more camping period, many Grade A friendly matches, and untainted motivation.

"In addition, he should make out time to watch age grade tournaments packaged by YSFON and other sister organisations. Any thing short of this may spell doom for us," Gwegwe said.
