Nairobi — As Athletics Kenya gears for the national polls, it is important that the elections are not only free, but also seen to be free and fair.
Already the Government and AK officials are pulling in different directions with regard to how the elections should be conducted.
The outgoing AK office is being accused of enjoying undue advantage in the elections by putting a machinery in place to ensure their re-election.
Athletics being the most successful sport in the country should be free from controversies, more so on issues such as elections.
Kenyans have seen fortunes in some sports plummet due to feuds occasioned by poorly managed elections.
While AK promises to operate within its constitution in organising and carrying out the elections, it is only fair that the officials listen to all parties, the Government included.
Chest-thumping, as has been seen in the recent past, will not help the AK officials who by all means need the Government.
Further, AK members should vote with their conscience and not accept inducements to elect leaders who have done nothing to develop the sport.
It is clear that some officials have outlived their usefulness but are determined to deny young vibrant leaders a chance. These are the officials who need to be voted out.
As a sign of respect to the athletes who have brought glory to Kenya, the best AK can do is to give the sport leadership that will be sensitive to the needs of players in the sport.
It is only with a vibrant leadership in place that Kenya will soar even higher in athletics.
