Uganda: Rugby Cranes Take World Cup Preparations to Nakuru

Kampala — The Rugby Cranes technical team will leave no stone unturned in their quest to ensure that the national sevens outfit qualifies for the 2009 International Rugby Board (IRB) Sevens Rugby World Cup (RWC) in Dubai next year.

As a consequence, the 20-man team that has been training for close to two weeks will test their credentials at the annual Prinsloo Nakuru 7s slated for October 10-12 in Kenya.

It will the team's second 7s international tournament this year having participated in the Tusker Safari 7s in June. The tourney will sharpen players ahead of the African qualifying round of the IRB 7s RWC set for October 31-November 2 in Tunis, Tunisia.

In pursuit of one of the three slots at stake in Tunisia, South African coaching director David Dobela is certain that competing in Nakuru will provide a perfect tonic for team chemistry.

"The team will create a better understanding and belief in what they can do against very good teams in Kenya including their national team (which plays in the lucrative 7s world series)," Dobela told Daily Monitor after a draining-three-hour training session on Friday evening.

National 7s coach John Musoke conducts the drills alongside Dobela who said the draw that pits his side with Swaziland, Cameroon and Namibia in Pool D is fair.

"We know nothing about Swaziland and Cameroon because they are new names in rugby. Namibia is best at 15s and not 7s but it's also important that we have four teams which gives us a descent chance," he added.

Pool A

Pool B
