Abuja — Chairman, Senate Committee on Aviation, Senator Anyim Ude, has called for urgent action against the spate of bank robberies in Afikpo town, Ebonyi State.
Ude, representing Ebonyi North, made the call in a letter dated Sept 12, he sent to the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro.
The letter was in response to a "Save Our Soul" appeal from bank managers in Afikpo.
The bankers, under the aegis of Afikpo Branch Managers Association, had in a letter dated September 4, addressed to Governor Martin Elechi, and copied to Ude, narrated their experiences in the hands of armed robbers in the area.
Ude told the Okiro that the alarming rate of bank robbery attacks in Afikpo had virtually crippled economic activities in the zone.
He complained that there had been four successful bank robberies in Afikpo between August 2007 and July, this year.
The Senator said several business outfits in the town had either been relocated or closed down, adding that the economic life of the zone had been paralysed, while some banks were threatening to relocate.
He called for urgent action by the police to protect lives and properties in the area, by intensifying road blocks and joint patrols. The lawmaker had in a previous letter dated February 15, drawn the attention of the IG to the same issue.

The duo alleged that rather than acting on the petition it wrote against a minister, name withheld, on a house he bought recently, the anti-graft agency, instead has turned the wheel of justice against them.
The management of a first generation bank is also joined as a defendant in the suit filed before the Federal Capital Territory High Court.
In the Originating Summon, the plaintiffs are praying the court to determine whether the EFCC is under a duty to act on the petition of the plaintiffs to investigate and examine the minister.
A determination whether a Minister of State i.e. public officer who bought a duplex worth N80 million barely four months of appointment as a minister can cause a reasonable suspicion that such money could be looted or public funds and thus liable to be investigated.
They also want the court to determine if by section 14 (2)c) of the 1999 constitution, Article 13 United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC), the EFCC Act and ICPC Act, only government agencies can fight corruption in Nigeria.
The lawmaker had in a previous letter dated February 15, drawn the attention of the IG to the same issue.
