Monrovia — President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has paid tribute to the National Youth Volunteers, saying their work represents service to the people.
The President spoke Friday at the Foreign Ministry when she met with 67 young people, representing the first batch of the National Youth Volunteers Service (NYVS).
The President commended the volunteers for their talent and professionalism and pledged to give priority to graduates of the National Youth Volunteers Service in consideration for scholarships for training and employment opportunities.
For her part, Youth and Sports Minister Etmonia Tarpeh said the Ministry will not limit the service to only university graduates. She added that the planners of the program decided against sending volunteers to the counties of origin. Minister Tarpeh said the volunteers endeared themselves to community dwellers who affectionately referred to them as the Liberian Peace Corps volunteers.
The service was jointly implemented by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the United Nations Development Programme. The volunteers were trained for six months in the areas of health, education and community development in Bong, Maryland, Lofa, and Grand Gedeh counties.
The 67 national youth volunteers served in 24 elementary schools and 12 clinics in 36 districts. They also taught high school students and held adult literacy programs in the evenings for residents in all four counties of their tour.
