Pretoria — Minister in the Presidency, Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang has encouraged churches to continue making a valuable contribution in addressing social ills in the country.
Speaking at the Elderly People's Month and Health Awareness Day event held in Attridgeville in Pretoria on Sunday, Minister Tshabalala-Msimang said the church had played a critical role in the fight against apartheid, based on its own conviction and ability to distinguish between wrong and right.
She said now, the church could help in addressing social problems such as drugs and alcohol abuse among the youth.
"The youth constitute a great part of the population in our country, they are our resource both now and in the future. The country's economy depends on them," Minister Tshabalala-Msimang said.
The minister called on the church, families, the private sectors, the youth itself and communities to become an active partner with government.
"We call upon the church to partner with government in driving the moral and spiritual renewal for our young people."
She said the church had been critical in assisting government in quelling the violent attacks directed at people from other countries which broke out in May this year.
