Nigeria: New Ministry'll Resolve Niger Delta Problem - Governor

6 October 2008

Governor Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers says the new Niger Delta Ministry will go a long way in solving the lingering problems in Niger Delta. Amaechi made the remark on Saturday while fielding questions from newsmen at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja.

"I think it will go a long way in resolving the problems of the area," he said. Amaechi said that the ministry would create employment opportunities for the people and help curb youth restiveness in the region.

"The important thing is that we should at least have development in the Niger Delta and create employment opportunities," he said. The governor said that when the people were gainfully employed, it would reduce the crises in the region. He said that the new ministry should be given a chance to bring peace to the region.

"We have to try it. As a former legislator, if a law is not tried, you cannot amend it," he said.
