Nigeria: Work Begins On New Tejuosho Market

5 October 2008

Lagos — Work has begun on the the old Tejuosho Market, which was ravaged by fire last year December, as earthmoving machines are presently busy constructing a more magnificent structure that will replace the burnt market.

This preliminary work is the first of many steps towards a bigger, better, and more befitting shopping arcade.

According to Stormberg Engineering Limited, that won the concession for the project from Lagos State, the goal is to erect an astounding edifice that fits into the Lagos State Government's Mega City Project.

When completed, the ultra-modern Tejuosho Market will provide over 4,000 shops that will accommodate the 1,600 displaced retailers from the old market and also offer more facilities such as a stand-by fire station, a police post, and emergency clinic, all accessible to shoppers, traders and customers.

According to the project developer, the market will offer an unprecedented shopping experience to all its users. One of the sophisticated features will be an innovative 720-slot car park, which will run through all of its five floors. It will also have elevators, passenger and cargo lifts and room-size refrigerators to help preserve perishables.

The total built up floor area will be 95,000 square metres. Apart from lock-up shops with sizes ranging from 9 sqm to 19 sqm, the plan also includes 4sqm Kee Klamps and larger shops/eateries of 129sqm.

The new commercial centre will be a high traffic, high density trading hub built around a series of courtyards. The building will exploit an architectural "Stack Effect" through open floors and atria to offer the best natural ventilation and daylight into such a large building.

The "Stack Effect" will let in fresh air at the lower ground level and funnel it through the various patios out of several vents in the roof. One of these courtyards can be configured into a food court where retailers can serve cooked meals to a large seating of diners within the dramatic sky-lit space.

To deliver these breathtaking elements, the Stormberg Engineering Limited is in partnership with a foreign construction Giant UBA Construction Limited. Also on the team are property managers like Giant Strides Properties Development Company Limited (as sole marketer), Agram Nigeria Limited (Architects), Pinconsult Associates Limited, Q-Tech Engineering Limited, Emsal Associate.

The project will be completed within 18 months in order to meet the target of the current administration objectives. This is one of the laudable Public, Private Participation projects being embarked upon by the administration of Mr. Babatunde Fashola.
