Nigeria: Abuja to Get Monorail Railway Soon - Modibbo

In an effort to ease transportation challenges in the Federal Capital Territory, the FCT Administration has concluded plans to partner with Intamin Transportaion Ltd and Ponet Nigeria Ltd to establish a monorail railway system in Abuja.

FCT Minister, Dr Aliyu Modibbo Umar, who disclosed this in his office recently while receiving two multi national corporations led by the managing director of Ponet Nigeria Ltd, Wolfgang Hahn, said that the technical analysis of the project would be concluded before December this year.

The minister has also formed a committee to be chaired by FCT transportation secretary, Mr. Segun Awolowo with the directors of engineering, Sylvester Ugonabo, Development Control, Yahya Sani, Abuja Environmental Protection Board, Kenneth Okafor,Coordinator Abuja Infrastructure Investment Centre, Hassan Muhammadu, Managing Director, Abuja Investment Ltd, Dr. Abdul Mukhtar and Director , Urban and Regional Planning as members to ensure quick take off of the railway system.

Dr. Modibbo said the Monorail Limited would be mode led like the Abuja Leasing Company which is a subsidiary of the Abuja Investment Limited .

He also added that emphasis would be laid on the Kubwa Expressway to be followed by the Airport road and Nyanya - Keffi road.

The Minister who emphasised that the rail system will drastically reduce problems of transportation in the Federal Capital Territory, stated that " there would be stop station at Katampe, Bwari exit, Kubwa, Dei Dei and Zuba for the convenience of the passengers along Kubwa road".

He added that the Berger to Gwagwa Karmo route would also have similar substations along the routes.

The project is expected to bring investment into Abuja.
