A socio-political group based in Owerri, the Imo Democratic Congress (IDC), has condemned in strong terms Imo State government sponsorship of one year anniversary concert held in honour of Italian musician, Signor Pavarotti, an event which held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja penultimate week.

A statement signed by the Executive Secretary of the organisation, Mr. Maximus Uba, described Imo government's action as wasteful, uncharitable and ego-tripping especially for a state that cannot boast of portable water not to talk of infrastructures. "The statement reads in part. The attention of our organisation has been drawn to the wasteful sponsorship of Pavarotti concert by Imo State government in Abuja last week.

Not only did government take care of the event, several women and men were brought from Italy on first class, lodged in exotic hotels and honorarium given.

But it ironical here that in over one year of taking office, the same government cannot give its people affordable water, our schools are in bad shape, while hospitals are now mere consulting clinics. The ostrich action of Ohakim, therefore, stand condemned in its entirety".

The group decried a situation where millions of Naira was spent sponsoring a musician only known to the governor and his ilk's whereas, several Imo musicians, who have done Imo and the nation proud remain unsung, their families in abject poverty while the governor found it convenient to spend tax payers money extolling the virtues of a foreign musician whose music had no direct bearing and impact on the average Imo man.
