Ethiopia: Minister, Koica Official Discuss Partnership On Water Issues

Addis Abeba — Minister of Water Resources, Asfaw Dingamo and the newly appointed chief Representative of Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Office in Ethiopia, Dr David San Gang ln Yeup Song on Wednesday discussed water development issues, the agency said.

The two parties deliberated on how to further strengthen their partnership in developing water and related issues. They also discussed ways to facilitate knowledge transfer opportunities on the issue.

On the occasion the minister explained to the representative that the water sector development is one of the major development undertakings of his government.

He also mentioned that in Ethiopia the water sector development, in the framework of Agricultural Development Led Industrialization (ADLI), is highly linked to the rural development and food security issue, which is the major preoccupation of the government to make the people food self sufficient.

The Minister said Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) program was one of the broad cooperation area where the government and the development partners were actively working together to improve the water sector development in the country.

Dr. Song on his part explained that the Republic of Korea has achieved sustainable development within shortest period of time and the water sector has also been developed well, according to the Agency's statement.

In this regard the Chief Representative said his government was ready to share the Korean development experience to Ethiopian government officers and experts in all sectors where Korea has got comparative advantages that include water.

The KOICA representative pledged to arrange to offer training for two ministry's professionals in Korea for next month.

KOICA has a water resource development project in Tigray that is well going and includes electrification of the nearby local residents, Biruk Zenebe, Program Coordinater at the Agency, who attended the discussion told the Daily Monitor by Phone yesterday.

Biruk added that water development issue is one of his agency's focal points in the nation.
