Namibia: Town Council Suspends Its Foreman

6 October 2008

THE Keetmanshoop Town Council has suspended one of its maintenance division foremen pending an investigation into alleged misuse of council equipment and labour.

The Council's Acting Chief Executive Officer, Bertie Reyneke, told The Namibian that Derick Singaram had been served with a suspension notice on Friday.

Reyneke declined to give more information, saying that the council would only elaborate on the matter following the completion of the investigation.

However, The Namibian was informed that the move to suspend Singaram came after he allegedly used the council's earthmoving equipment and some labourers to do private work for him at the Namibia Institute of Mining and Technology (NIMT) campus at the town during working hours.

Singaram was recently awarded a tender by NIMT to do some renovation work at the southern campus, which will be officially opened in March next year.
