Luanda — Angola's capital city, Luanda, is hosting Monday the main celebration of the World Habitat Day, with the participation of the UN executive secretary for Urban Settlement, Anna Tibaijuca.
Luanda has been chosen by the United Nations to host the event that is celebrate every first Monday of October of every year, as part of the world body's resolution on Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat).
Attending the celebration of the event taking place for the first time in the African continent will be housing ministers of Africa, particularly those from the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC).
The celebration will include cultural activities, handing over of awards, and address by some government officials.
The event that is celebrated since 1985 throughout the world is intended to remind the nations and societies of the importance of housing as a human basic need for the construction of cities and fair and democratic societies.
Going under the theme "Harmonious Cities" this year celebration is also intended to elevate the consciousness of the societies about the state of the cities and the basic rights for adequate housing for everyone.
UN-Habitat is the UN agency that responds for the promotion of the social, environmental and sustainable development of the human settlements, with the main purpose of securing appropriate housing for everyone.
