Kumasi — As part of activities marking this year's world Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, a special "Readwide What Do You Know?" quiz contest was held at the Teacher's Hall at Amakom in Kumasi, yesterday.

The contest was organized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in collaboration with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation and sponsored by Readwide Ghana Limited and Voltic Mineral Water and others.

Six second cycle schools selected from the Ashanti Region, basically from the Kumasi Metropolis in sparticular participated in the contest.

The theme for this year's World Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer was, "The Montreal Protocol: Global Partnership for Global Benefits.

Participating schools were Yaa Asantewaa Senior High School, Asanteman Senior High School, Kumasi Girls, the KNUST Technical Secondary School, T. I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School and Prempeh College, all in Kumasi, Ashanti.

Overall, the contest was keen with the pupils exhibiting deep knowledge of the earth, the environment and the Ozone Layer.

The Quiz Master, Lawyer Dan Afari Yeboah, was at his usual best, bustling with excitement and making an excellent presentation of the programme, keeping the participants at ease.

He cajoled, teased, coaxed and made fun during his presentation through his usual quick wit and sense of humour.

At the end of the day, all 12 contestants (two from each school) were given consolation prizes of thirty Ghana cedis (GH¢30.00) and certificate of participation.

The KNUST Technical Secondary School carried the day with 24 points and won for itself a very expensive generator; it was followed by Prempeh College with 22 points, they took away a magnificent Lawn Mower; and trailing them in third position was Asanteman Senior High School who were awarded a phenomenal 21" color television.

The Deputy Director of the Ozone Unit of the EPA, Mr. Emmanuel Osae-Quansah, said "people the world over should protect the earth because the earth is the only one we have", and "we are all at risk of dying if the Ozone Layer is harmed in any way or is depleted."

Mr. Osae-Quansah said, "The choice of second cycle schools to participate in the programme was to whip up interest in the youth to learn more about the earth, the environment and the Ozone Layer". He maintained that the students' participation in the programme was to educate the public at large. He encouraged students to take particular interest in the environment and therefore be its keeper."

He thanked the participants for making time to attend the quiz contest and particularly praised them for their excellent performance and discipline displayed during the contest. He also rendered apology to Kumasi Academy who, though invited, could not be featured.

The Teacher's Hall at Amakom in Kumasi, yesterday, was full to capacity, an indication that the "Readwide What Do You Know?" is still an all-time favourite radio and television programme, appealing especially to the youth.
