The Premier Soccer League's Football Department has started a one week-long Laws of the Game seminar series which aim to create improved dialogue between match officials, match commissioners, coaches and teams.
PSL CEO Kjetil Siem, Life President Dr Leepile Taunyane, General Manager Ace Ncobo and PSL Pro-Forma prosecutor Zola Majavu were in attendance.
The Safa Referees and Review Committees were represented by Adeel Carelse, Philip Masemola and Steve Goddard who also serve as Match Commissioners.
The teams were represented by their coaches as well as captains.
PSL and NFL teams from Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo, as well as Bay United from Port Elizabeth were in attendance.
"I am very impressed with the commitment shown by the teams today; some of whom travelled very early from areas as far as Mpumalanga and Limpopo. This type of interaction assists to bring about a greater level of understanding from all stakeholders involved," Siem said.
Masemola said he was extremely pleased with the turnout and insight from the exercise.
"It was a real eye-opener, we are now in a position to know exactly what needs to be done going forward." he explained. "I hope that we continue on the same trend with the seminars in the other parts of the country."
Moroka Swallows' Brazilian coach, Julio Leal, was full of praise for the initiative, saying: "It is the kind of event that we need to hold at the beginning of every season. It provides all of us with a chance to express our feelings. We have these kind of exercises in Brazil as well; they really help to improve the standard of the game holistically."
Former referee Goddard said that the event helped to provide each stake-holder with an opportunity to understand the other parties' understanding of the rules and laws of the game.
"Now things are becoming clearer because it sometimes happens that a coach or player would have a slightly different understanding of a certain rule to how the referee or linesman sees it. So this provides the platform for all to express themselves around such matters."
Cape Town will host the series tomorrow (Tuesday), followed by Bloemfontein (Wednesday) and Durban (Thursday).
